About hi, my name is jay reilly.  i am a commercial/ editorial photographer based in carlsbad, ca.  some of my past client have include Nike, Sony, Hyatt, Conde Nast among many others.  this blog is dedicated to showcasing my assignment work and helping other photographers by sharing tips and tricks that have been vital to my business.  feel free to leave comments or post questions. thanks!
just returned from napa and here are a few of the images.  had a really fun trip and took 3 assistants with me...not really assistants, but friends and a wife. ;-)  plan on returning to finish up this shoot and series soon.  sometimes it is hard to explain to the wife, just drop me off on the side of the road and i will walk to the next winery ;-)  always get better images when i am walking then moving 65 mph. spanish comes in handy as well and i wish i had a few more important words for this trip.  i will know them for next time!

so with a new waterhousing comes new lenes.  just got the canon 28mm f1.8.  got it cause i needed those wide shots underwater and this was the right price for about $450.  it had some decent reviews and so now i own it.  i am pretty happy with it so far.  here are a few from a session with mike.

Krystal Mann: Great shots! Gotta love that lens.....oh, and the subject is pretty nice to look at too. ;) (07.25.08 @ 01:57 PM)
Sherman: How do you think it compares against the 35 1.4L? Might be a silly question but that 35 is about $700 more. (07.25.08 @ 03:10 PM)
jay reilly: if you want to comment, please use the "comment anonymously" as the other option does not seem to be working right now, thanks! i have never shot the 35mm 1.4. i would like focal lenght more for what i am doing, but it does not fit in my housing with out buying a new port ;-( but i think the 28 and 35 are far enough it would justify having both for different characteristics. (07.25.08 @ 03:47 PM)
chelo: Cool! If you said you took these shots with a cardboard box strapped together with bubble gum I would believe you- cause your just that good! MacGuyver status!! Jay, you got a workshop coming up or what? (07.25.08 @ 04:25 PM)
jay: chelo! your funny...no workshop planned...yet, but maybe working on it! (07.25.08 @ 05:41 PM)
Katie Beverley: Dang! If Jay Reilly had a worshop I would SO go! I want to see some underwater shots...! :) (07.25.08 @ 06:04 PM)
boone: thats a sweet lens yo, i picked one up this summer as well. a total gem for the price. (07.27.08 @ 08:42 PM)
Misty Dawn: I love the last two, but especially the 2nd to last one! Awesome, man! (07.29.08 @ 07:06 AM)
Wesley Brown: That's what I primarily use :) I'm eyeing the 50mm 1.4, though. (10.01.08 @ 06:11 PM)

Wayne Toshikazu: Awesome! I must be really out of touch with the world, cuz until I saw your images I had no idea that people do this! Looks pretty sweet. :-) (07.25.08 @ 10:56 AM)
jay reilly: hi wayne. paddle boarding is becoming very popular, not only at the beach but in rivers and lakes. paticular breaks and beaches in san diego, its more popular, cardiff is one of them. (07.25.08 @ 03:50 PM)

here in Baltimore md shooting some fitness images.  for what we were looking for, Baltimore is great for backdrops.  have a nice run down feel with some cool urban scapes.  fortunately i had my brother andrew reilly producing the shoot and he knows all the great places to shoot in Baltimore.  thanks to mark for the modeling.

on the technical side, these are all shot with very light weight speedlights.  the lighting kit we have is not very portable so the fast set up and breakdown of the speedlights work pretty well.  for the most part all of the shooting was in pretty deep shade so it made it pretty easy for the speedlights to over power the ambient light.
