About hi, my name is jay reilly.  i am a commercial/ editorial photographer based in carlsbad, ca.  some of my past client have include Nike, Sony, Hyatt, Conde Nast among many others.  this blog is dedicated to showcasing my assignment work and helping other photographers by sharing tips and tricks that have been vital to my business.  feel free to leave comments or post questions. thanks!
when i am producing stock, sometimes finding great models with authentic looks and natural environments is the most challenging part of producing.  for my stock and editorial work, a lot of what i shoot is natural scenarios, families, kids and loved ones doing cool stuff.  so i have had tons of requests from people to shoot their families...especially this time of the year.  so i have a very fun offer to make it happen.  too much detail to post on this blog, but if your in san diego/orange county, and your looking for kick ass family pictures with a lifestyle spin, comment on this blog post and include your email and i will send you the offer.  availability limited to as much as i can take on so comment fast.  bonus points for spreading the word on this to friends!

thanks, jay

well, honestly is there a bad time to be shooting?  is there such athing as bad light?  how can there be bad light?  light is just light, right?! ;-)  well, i admit to being that photographer that sometimes puts the camera away high noon because the light is tough.  but clients don't want to hear that...they just need the images created...so working in bad light was my challenge today.

case and point, had this quick shoot, was postponed from last week, now was the time we could do it and now is in the middle of the day, what the heck, lets shoot it!  funny thing is there was a german creative team and photographer shooting portraits of professional cyclist.  you can see the team in the shot over allies shoulder.  they were shooting a few profoto heads and they must of looked at my like i was crazy.  i could see what they were doing...i think i like my shots better! ;-)

Tonya: yea you rocked the high noon! I shoot when I need to also and make it work. I WILL avoid this type of light IF I can, but it won't make or break me. love the challenge. (09.24.08 @ 01:05 PM)
Shari : GREAT images! You definitely ROCKED the high noon light. I would love to hear the exif info on the first and last image. AWESOME!! (09.24.08 @ 08:44 AM)
jay: i guess i better say before i get hate mail, that i too use strobes and if it is a look that i am going for, there is a time and place...but so much of my stuff is fast, long shot lists with a natural feel. maybe next post will be about a strobe session, just to be fair. (09.24.08 @ 07:44 AM)
Christopher Vaughn: This is so true! I had a similar situation Downtown San Diego earlier this year. I was shooting for Braddie Bratate clothing, high noon, hardly any equipment and got some amazing shots! Mean while across the street a high end handbag designer flew in an Italian Photographer with an army of assistants and equipment. By the end of the shoot some of the assistants were hanging out with us watching us work! Here's my fav shot from the afternoon: Gaslamp Red How many of you out there have had a similar experience? (09.24.08 @ 06:54 AM)
Guillaume: Hello Jay. Very nice pics as usual, what is the lens on that shoot? (09.24.08 @ 06:52 AM)

here is the whitney clan! my favorite kids portrait photographer, tara whitney, emailed and asked about shooting her family!! lucky me, look how cute these guys are...and what style! i feel very lucky to have met these guys and all the kids are very sweet...and a bit crazy!! which i like.

Some highlights were playing kenna's character game, anna's super outgoing nature, and watching nate and drew surf for the first time, pretty cool!

Any suggestions on what camera would fit the bill will be deeply appreciated. thanks for your time. peace dori (09.23.08 @ 09:11 AM)

Kirsten: hiya... I'm sure someone will have pointed this out to you already, but the link to Heffner doesn't work as it's missing an 'f' :) (09.25.08 @ 08:22 AM)
Tiffany Hix: These are wonderful Jay! The light is amazing! (09.25.08 @ 07:15 AM)

Jon Carder: Hey Jay, I got sucked into checking out your whole blog. loving it! FYI I found a small typo in the intro paragraph at the top of the blog - "some of my past client include Nike..." should be "some of my past clients include Nike..." I've got a ton of these typos on MojoPages and always appreciate when people point them out, hope you don't mind. P.S. We're going to create a business profile for you on MojoPages so when people search for photographer in San Diego you'll pop up in the results. We really appreciate you being at the event and want to do what we can to help. Lisa will let you know when your profile is all set-up so you can pimp it out with some of your photos. (09.22.08 @ 12:28 PM)
jay: robert, you would laugh if you saw how simple it is, basically one large umbrella, and a white wall, or backdrop. nothing too fancy, but fun. (09.22.08 @ 08:59 AM)
robert: Is this a photo box you set up? i noticed you did it for a wedding and posted some pics on your wedding blog site. if this is a photo booth you set up (or even if it isn't), write about it plesae! nice stuff! (09.21.08 @ 10:14 PM)
jay: hey jon, feel free to post them on mojopages, just give me a link or credit or something ;-) thanks! (09.19.08 @ 04:51 PM)
Jon Carder: Wow, you're damn good. Nice to meet you at the event. It's clear you've got serious talent. Thanks for shooting the Mojoer's. Do you mind if I post them on MojoPages? -Jon MojoPages.com (09.19.08 @ 04:42 PM)
