Hi Everyone,  The long anticipated release of Aurora's green collection is now live.  I was happy to see two of my shots featured as green images, the one of my son in his tie-dye rolling in the grass and the other Emy's green flip flops in green grass.

Most of my selected images were not at all conceptually intentional as green, but good to see them in there and perhaps will shoot more green in the future.

to see the collection, go here: http://auroraphotos.com/greenhub.shtml

when i am producing stock, sometimes finding great models with authentic looks and natural environments is the most challenging part of producing.  for my stock and editorial work, a lot of what i shoot is natural scenarios, families, kids and loved ones doing cool stuff.  so i have had tons of requests from people to shoot their families...especially this time of the year.  so i have a very fun offer to make it happen.  too much detail to post on this blog, but if your in san diego/orange county, and your looking for kick ass family pictures with a lifestyle spin, comment on this blog post and include your email and i will send you the offer.  availability limited to as much as i can take on so comment fast.  bonus points for spreading the word on this to friends!

thanks, jay

UPDATE[2am on Thursday] - wow!!  so many responses, thanks everyone.  I will try to respond to everyone, i am trying to keep it all local as I do not think its fair to have people drive all the way from LA or even other crazy far places!  and if this is a success and still have people interested i might move into some December dates as well.  but i fill these first and then see.  thanks to all!

hi everyone!  had a small mention in this months issue of PDN.  i always look forward to the stock issue...find out what people are doing and who else is out there...  in an effort to find a second agency beyond aurora, i first signed with jupiter/workbook which has been good, but wanted to keep my options open.  i have always been a fan of uppercut images in the stock world and when they expressed some interest, it all fell into place.  upper cut has been super easy to work with and look forward to future shoots and submissions.

the article is about who agencies are signing and why...wish that i had this article to read about 3 years ago.  it is a pretty interesting read if your interested in this niche of photography and if there is interest enough from this blog readership i would shed some insight on how to get an agency contract.

so with much success with my aurora collection of images licensing on getty and corbis, i felt like experimenting a bit.  the only big agency that i was unrepresented on was jupiter.  so i thought i would push a smaller collection of people/lifestyle images images direct with jupiter though workbook.  all agencies are a bit different on the expected return and the time it takes to make it happen.  but after about 8 months from the time i signed paperwork, to today, i am happy to say that the first license with jupiter was a great one!   also very interested to see what images do well.  it is very hard to presume one image is going to do very well and another one is not... and if i posted all my big sellers, you might laugh!  certainly not portfolio gems;-)

but the funny story behind the first image license with jupiter is that the image was from an editorial stroy shot for riviera magazine where next to nothng was paid to me for producing the image.  it was one of those smaller stories that does not really have much of a budget, but i agreed to take it as i felt the images might be marketable beyond the editorial.  here are a few but the bottom right image made me $4500 this month!  yehaa!

can your find my son in the above set of images?  the hint is he looks just like emy ;-)

boone says: do work! isn't it funny what images bring in the dough vs port pieces. (10.27.08 @ 12:43 AM)
Robert benson says: Hey Jay: I sold an image through Jupiter this month too! Only $150 on my end though. Can I ask how the image was licensed, to what kind of company? Was the royalty total $4500 or was that your split! Congrats. that's cool. (10.26.08 @ 06:22 PM)
delphine says: Great photos!! $$ well deserved :) (10.26.08 @ 01:32 AM)
jay says: sara - ouch, that is tough. i have very strong opinions about this and i best keep them to myself... but i do love them for archiving! well, with some luck maybe a larger agency will pick up your images. but i do feel your pain, this is a very time-consuming process to prepare images for stock at that level. (10.23.08 @ 11:12 AM)
Sara says: @Jay I spent a bajillion hours over the past year shooting, submitting, keywording, and promoting our PhotoShelter portfolio and then out of the blue they closed up shop. Diversify - Lesson Learned! (10.23.08 @ 11:02 AM)
jay says: hey sara - yeah, pretty nutz...i guess that is one reason why it is good to be diverse in the channels. but to be honest, it does not really affect me that much, i don't really care who licenses my images as long as someone does!! i am still reading the press releases and waiting to see what happens (10.23.08 @ 09:01 AM)
Sara says: Hah. And now Jupiter has been sold to Getty. The stock world is going crazy! (10.23.08 @ 08:27 AM)
Julie Cruz says: Sweet!!!!!!!! Congrats! (10.22.08 @ 11:32 PM)
Mikael says: Holy fire balls batman! $4500 sounds good to me. Way to go! (10.22.08 @ 08:30 PM)

well, not yet, but i am excited to announce that i have a steady stream of rights managed images hitting corbis.  no surprise that the first set of images that hit are a surfing series.  one nice benefit with the aurora photos relationship is that i know that when i am still asleep in the west coast, on the east coast there is someone up bright and early trying the get the images in distributed in the right channels and that is appreciated.  thanks aurora.

just a fun day at the pool.  the underwater stuff has been pretty challenging but i am starting to have some fun.  post processing is tough and the skin tones are tricky to dial in.  but these are a bit more on the dreamy side...which i kinda like.  one nice thing about shooting in the water, you worry less about the time, mid-day, not a problem!  more water stuff coming while summer is here!

Im about to embark upon a project which entails underwater photography but since im new to this particular area of photography i was wondering if you would be able to give me any tips on equipment and possibly shed some light on how you managed to achieve such beautiful shots? was it very expensive equipment or are there alternative ways of doing this, ie - using disposables? thankyou for your time in reading this i hope it isn't too much trouble to reply all the best Joanna Cresswell (10.06.09 @ 08:24 AM)

here in Baltimore md shooting some fitness images.  for what we were looking for, Baltimore is great for backdrops.  have a nice run down feel with some cool urban scapes.  fortunately i had my brother andrew reilly producing the shoot and he knows all the great places to shoot in Baltimore.  thanks to mark for the modeling.

on the technical side, these are all shot with very light weight speedlights.  the lighting kit we have is not very portable so the fast set up and breakdown of the speedlights work pretty well.  for the most part all of the shooting was in pretty deep shade so it made it pretty easy for the speedlights to over power the ambient light.
