Hi Everyone,  The long anticipated release of Aurora's green collection is now live.  I was happy to see two of my shots featured as green images, the one of my son in his tie-dye rolling in the grass and the other Emy's green flip flops in green grass.

Most of my selected images were not at all conceptually intentional as green, but good to see them in there and perhaps will shoot more green in the future.

to see the collection, go here: http://auroraphotos.com/greenhub.shtml

hi everyone!  had a small mention in this months issue of PDN.  i always look forward to the stock issue...find out what people are doing and who else is out there...  in an effort to find a second agency beyond aurora, i first signed with jupiter/workbook which has been good, but wanted to keep my options open.  i have always been a fan of uppercut images in the stock world and when they expressed some interest, it all fell into place.  upper cut has been super easy to work with and look forward to future shoots and submissions.

the article is about who agencies are signing and why...wish that i had this article to read about 3 years ago.  it is a pretty interesting read if your interested in this niche of photography and if there is interest enough from this blog readership i would shed some insight on how to get an agency contract.

so with much success with my aurora collection of images licensing on getty and corbis, i felt like experimenting a bit.  the only big agency that i was unrepresented on was jupiter.  so i thought i would push a smaller collection of people/lifestyle images images direct with jupiter though workbook.  all agencies are a bit different on the expected return and the time it takes to make it happen.  but after about 8 months from the time i signed paperwork, to today, i am happy to say that the first license with jupiter was a great one!   also very interested to see what images do well.  it is very hard to presume one image is going to do very well and another one is not... and if i posted all my big sellers, you might laugh!  certainly not portfolio gems;-)

but the funny story behind the first image license with jupiter is that the image was from an editorial stroy shot for riviera magazine where next to nothng was paid to me for producing the image.  it was one of those smaller stories that does not really have much of a budget, but i agreed to take it as i felt the images might be marketable beyond the editorial.  here are a few but the bottom right image made me $4500 this month!  yehaa!

jupiter.jpg
can your find my son in the above set of images?  the hint is he looks just like emy ;-)

boone says: do work! isn't it funny what images bring in the dough vs port pieces. (10.27.08 @ 12:43 AM)
Robert benson says: Hey Jay: I sold an image through Jupiter this month too! Only $150 on my end though. Can I ask how the image was licensed, to what kind of company? Was the royalty total $4500 or was that your split! Congrats. that's cool. (10.26.08 @ 06:22 PM)
delphine says: Great photos!! $$ well deserved :) (10.26.08 @ 01:32 AM)
jay says: sara - ouch, that is tough. i have very strong opinions about this and i best keep them to myself... but i do love them for archiving! well, with some luck maybe a larger agency will pick up your images. but i do feel your pain, this is a very time-consuming process to prepare images for stock at that level. (10.23.08 @ 11:12 AM)
Sara says: @Jay I spent a bajillion hours over the past year shooting, submitting, keywording, and promoting our PhotoShelter portfolio and then out of the blue they closed up shop. Diversify - Lesson Learned! (10.23.08 @ 11:02 AM)
jay says: hey sara - yeah, pretty nutz...i guess that is one reason why it is good to be diverse in the channels. but to be honest, it does not really affect me that much, i don't really care who licenses my images as long as someone does!! i am still reading the press releases and waiting to see what happens (10.23.08 @ 09:01 AM)
Sara says: Hah. And now Jupiter has been sold to Getty. The stock world is going crazy! (10.23.08 @ 08:27 AM)
Julie Cruz says: Sweet!!!!!!!! Congrats! (10.22.08 @ 11:32 PM)
Mikael says: Holy fire balls batman! $4500 sounds good to me. Way to go! (10.22.08 @ 08:30 PM)

hi all, as you may or may not have remembered from a blog post about 3 months ago...i was invited to join in on a 15 year celebration of Aurora Photos in photography.  The concept is a pool of Aurora photographers was selected and a chain reaction of inspiration is created by shooting a self assigned session based in concepts, ideas, color, subjects or whatever from the previous photographer image.

so i patiently waited until my turn, which came up 48 hours ago.  so with out much more info than that...here was the image that Logan Moc-Bunting created as a screen capture off the aurora15.com site:

logan.jpg

I love this image.  tons of character, concept, color, shape and tone.  so i had a lot of work with but honestly very little time to create.  so i was going to hit it at a 3 concept level, the dog, aviation and color and shape.  here are the 3 images that i create in about 15 mins.

auroraedit.jpg

so which one did they pick?  you tell me!  you be the editor!  in the comments below...pick: blue sky, pilot portrait, or lucy and ice cream.  the winner will get...

a 5x5 inch fine art book from aurora photos
and fast portrait session by me...if you live in san diego, must be  shot in carlsbad or oceanside, as if you want that..

so vote away!!  you only have till the image posts on aurora15.com...about 45 hours.  all the winners will be dropped in a hat and one winner picked.  you have to be present to win, just kidding!

good luck!

this morning i had a shoot with athletic/model remi and wanted to share a few pics.  i guess the photo lesson of the day could be light meters!  i got mine years ago and have never really stopped using it even when i switched to digital.  sure you have that nice little screen on the back but under the speed and pressure of the shoot, sometimes it is difficult to read the lcd.  but with the light meter, i know the exposure will be spot on. especially with some of the back light, it really makes exposure much easier.

jay says: hi millie!! lets see some of those wet shots!! i use the sekonic l-358 works great for me! (09.23.08 @ 10:14 AM)
millie holloman says: Hey Jay! I am really enjoying the underwater housing. Now I just need to find more time to use it! I am still in the learning phases, so I have also been enjoying the tips you have been posting here. You do GREAT work! Quick question, what light meter do you use and would you recommend it or is there another light meter you would recommend? I am looking to purchase a nice one in the near future. I have an old cheap one now and I don't really like it at all. (09.21.08 @ 01:44 PM)
jay says: hey dave! there is a level of trust that happens at some point, i think it is your trust in the choices you make on a shoot. would make for a nice blog topic if i can think of how to best communicate the ideas! (09.10.08 @ 05:37 PM)
Dave Good says: Great shots! Yeah, couldn't agree more. My light meter's, like, one of the most important tools I own. I started in film so it's second nature to use. And as for that 'nice little screen on the back' of the digital camera, I rarely use it during an actual shoot. Stopping to look can really impede the mood, connectivity, etc. I have to admit the little screen's incredibly helpful (especially in weird light, etc), but when I use a film camera the work flow is vastly different. Part of which I attribute to not stopping to have a look after every shot...maybe your thoughts on this sometime in a future post? (09.10.08 @ 01:26 PM)
jay says: wow! THE robert benson!! ;-) yes, ucsd track has been very good to me for shooting! i guess locations are not like surf spots, so we can mention it. next time i go there, there will 5 people shooting there! i kid i kid, i joke with you...backlite shooting, would love to talk about that...maybe next time i have the op, will post about it! (09.09.08 @ 01:22 PM)
robert benson says: Hey, that's the track at UCSD! Nice stuff. Since your talking about light and exposures, I'd really like to see a posting on your blog about how you shoot into the sun, with sun right behind you, or purposely overexposing to blow out backgrounds... that kind of thing, your style. well, not yet, but i am excited to announce that i have a steady stream of rights managed images hitting corbis.  no surprise that the first set of images that hit are a surfing series.  one nice benefit with the aurora photos relationship is that i know that when i am still asleep in the west coast, on the east coast there is someone up bright and early trying the get the images in distributed in the right channels and that is appreciated.  thanks aurora.

was flipping though the recent issue of PDN and happen to see my image used for the IPN Stock Agency campaign advert, see below.  kinda funny because i never really understood the images that IPN selected as featured advert images.  there really never seems to be a connection to the message...but i am glad that they featured mine.  but the question is...does it actually mean that you as a photographer will see more stock sales from the features?  I doubt it but it certainly can not hurt.

a few more features below the IPN feature, including aurora's outdoor photographer feature and images used in jupiter's web site.
