funny thing i came across when reading riviera this week.  in the front under "the radar now!"  they have a small piece call surf city sellout.  i guess ohio-based hollister has capitalized on the surf culture and has firmed an agreement with the classic surf city Huntington beach, ca to have cameras mounted on the pier to beam images of so cal surfing life to every hollister store.  Huntington beach stands to gain 4.8 million over 25 years and about $400,000 in marine safety equipment.  hmm...a few really interesting thoughts on this relationship...

amazing some un expected kid, women, man would be filmed and used as promotional image for a company without consent, or a release to do so  i would think that alone would be a deal breaker.

crazy to think that Huntington beach, arguably has some of the strongest roots in 20's era California surf town would allow it to happen and not be an authentic surf brand.  money is king i guess, even in surf utopia Huntington

amazing that the equipment would not be vandalized to un-usable.  surfer mag cried foul by saying "whoring out the hard work of the real surf garmet industry"...i am sure most are not excited about it

i think it is either genius or really slimy exploitation of the culture that i have grown to love and embrace as my own...

would i shoot for hollister...i am sure i would.  but they have not called yet.

whitney elizabeth says: i am originally from NC and as a teen used to shop at A&F and Hollister because it was cool and everyone wanted to be like the kids in "cali." OK, so now that I actually LIVE in california, it seems so dorky!! And that kinda of bothers me that all these unsuspecting people will be caught on camera... (10.30.08 @ 01:49 PM)
jay says: not too big of a deal, but it is a funny. they could have saved the budget for more lifestyle photography.;-) (10.29.08 @ 04:43 PM)
Kat says: I'm surprised that this has surfaced now, since when I was in high school several years ago and was shopping at Hollister, I always saw the HB web cams projected in their main lobby. So, FYI, this isn't something new. This is just the first time we've heard about it. (10.29.08 @ 03:51 PM)
Tonya says: I'm an old CA girl and yea, not sure how I feel about this. There are already tons of "cams" on pages all over the web that show such places as beaches, but like you said, beamed into a for-profit business seems to step over the line. I don't really blame Huntington, they see it as a big revenue stream, but I think they should very clearly label everywhere you could possibly be "seen" by the cameras so you have the choice of "appearing". And if camera areas ARE labeled, you just get a parade of Today-show-style wavers and screamers ("HI MOM!") and that probably isn't what Hollister wants. SO it doesn't seem 1) fair or 2) plausible. hi everyone,  well, still working out the self promo and actually was really inspired by the nikon promo awards.  if you have not seen it yet, check it out, pretty cool stuff.  the tough thing with me is i do not really have a set advertising budget.  i really need to start setting budget aside for these type of projects but currently i am looking at making promos for a local/regional market and in some instances some potential national clients.

so i am getting crafty and tryng to do it on my own budget.  still working out the paper selections, sizes, shipping method and design.  here are some tested layouts.  next step is to source the envalopes or shipping package.  i am thinking something clear to see the work inside.

i very much wanted to go this year....for the first time, but schedule does not permit.  but what is the real kicker is that PDN calls on the day i decide not to go and licenses one of my images for their booth graphics!  ha!  so if someone is there, and you see some chick diving for a volleyball on their booth, can you snap a shot of it for me, would love to see what it looks like in life size...or they say its gonna be large...so we shall see.

thanks!

long time PDN reader, PHOTOSERVE photog, IPN stock contributor and first time PDN PHOTOPLUS attendee...maybe, finally.  really thinking of heading to new york this year, for the first time.  in recent years, i was always booked up on shoots during the event dates and this year, being close enough to the dates, i can actually leave them open if i decide to attend.  the conferences that looked most appealing to me are:

october 23
the art of the portrait ~ platon
world class stock ~ tyler stableford
real faces, commercial impact ~ paul foster and amy steigbigel

october 24
motion stock for still photographers ~ panel
how to get work from ad agencies ~ debra weiss
staying successful in stock ~ panel
survival tactics in stock ~ jack hollingsworth

october 25
why shoot stock ~ panel
stock photography and the consumer ~ dan heller
lighting for commercial production ~ f scott shafer
how to break into lifestyle/travel photography ~ panel

if your heading to photoplus, let me know, maybe we can swap notes and say hi.  or if you have seen any of the above talks and care to share insight, please do!

just thought i would share my backdrop system, which i really dig on.  i used to spend tons of money on rolled paper for my backdrops... i switched to vinyl rolls which is great, because, they roll or fold up easy, they don't wrinkle, if they get dirty, i just wipe them down with a spray cleaner and they are as good as new.  plus have you shot with paper?  it sucks!

plus when most of my shoots are done, my backdrop looks like this on the floor...not a problem ;-)  i get all my vinyl at fabric stores...

hanging out on comm arts web site this weekend, yeah, thats how i spend my weekends.... and was checking out the web pick of the day and just wanted to share.  i have a thing for jamaica and i really found this collaboration inspiring and well produced.

Live Hope Love Poet Kwame Dawes writes of the plight of Jamaicans with HIV/AIDS in this lyric presentation—commissioned by the Pulitzer Center—of music, documentary photography and video interviews.

here in Baltimore md shooting some fitness images.  for what we were looking for, Baltimore is great for backdrops.  have a nice run down feel with some cool urban scapes.  fortunately i had my brother andrew reilly producing the shoot and he knows all the great places to shoot in Baltimore.  thanks to mark for the modeling.

on the technical side, these are all shot with very light weight speedlights.  the lighting kit we have is not very portable so the fast set up and breakdown of the speedlights work pretty well.  for the most part all of the shooting was in pretty deep shade so it made it pretty easy for the speedlights to over power the ambient light.

if you could not tell, there are always skaters skating right outside my door.  they always seem to get hassled by the police, and I am always inviting them over for a can of coke and a portrait.  i guess the police are protecting me from them ;-)

its just nice when it all works.  ever get that feeling?  just wanted to say thanks to two companies that really have it together.  customer service has been great and i look forward to many more orders with these guys.  so i have been making new printed portfolios and it is kind of a expensive pain in the but to select the images, edit the images, print and make all of these portfolios.  but it is almost done!

WHCC for printing. these guys are just great, i can FTP and what almost seems like 2 days it comes via UPS looking perfect.

PINA ZANGARO for printed portfolios.  i had these great plans to custom make books.  when it came down to what i wanted to make, they beat me to it.

props.jpgjust putting a bunch together for a rep.  get it in circulation!
