a few out-takes from the san diego mag shoot.
tips for shooting from a helicopter:
1. don't eat a big lunch
2. minimize composing images though the viewfinder
3. have a shot list and plan of attack for a flight path
4. dress warm
5. buckle in
6. as you climb, have read the altimeter to you can give the pilot altitude direction when your shooting - most of my shots were 100-500 feet, and now i know just about exactly where to be to communicate it
have fun!
if anyone wants to go on a helicopter shoot, we can share the cost;-)

It does look really fun... I'm also interested in the cost. Also, what was the problem with composing through the viewfinder... too sporadic?

Ray Pertierra says:
Nice images and looks like great fun. Approx. how much is splitting the costs?

Hey Everyone,
Just a fun post from a commercial shoot about 2 months ago, just have not had time to really follow up on it. I was hired to produce a 7 image campaign for my favorite sweetener SPLENDA! I played producer as well as photographer on this job. I would rather just be photographer but the budget was a bit tighter and i need to stretch what they had. years of producing my own images pays off when you need it to...
15 models, an East Hampton modern dwelling, gym rental, tons of props and prop products, a crew of about 10, food, transportation and lots of profoto rental stuff...not so bad but planning it all from 3000 miles a way was a challenge.
Here are 3 of the images produced, the comped one actually has my son playing model, as well as some assigned friends kids as the kid models.
The images are really very simple in concept but in perfection are very particular abut the expressions, the energy, the composition, and the interaction between models and between their products/food. In some instances using FUEL Digital retouching services in NYC to perfect the image on all points.

Hi Everyone! This is one of those shoots you have tons of fun shooting. Felt like I was back in high school! Sage Hill is a very nice private high school in Newport Beach that hired me to shoot all their imagery. The shoot is spread out over 2 days and day 2 is this week. For the most part day 1 was school living, and the arts. Day 2 will be classroom shooting other various scenarios.
This post is a little photo heavy but giving the students who I think were eager to see some pics something to check out. If your here visiting from Sage Hill, please leave a comment in the comment section below...see you on Monday!

These are great! Not what my high school days looked like.

An instructor says:
Nice images. Our campus is incredibly "friendly" and small enough that nobody ever goes unnoticed. Even so, we all get busy, and it's interesting to see that a one-day visit by a photographer such as yourself can capture aspects of our students' on-campus lives that we might not see when they are in our own classroom.
(11.06.09 @ 03:09 PM)
Jeff Portaro says:
These are great. Were they shot for promotional materials or did the school hire you to shoot these for use in the yearbook?
(11.06.09 @ 07:51 AM)
Roon says:
Jay---I LOVE this post...the images are rad--alive. Nice colors and the joy of the kids ALMOST makes me want to go back to HS.

Chad Jarae says:
Looks like a fun school to attend. Your images really make sage hill feel like a student focused H.S. and the arts program looks amazing. I love the images from day one and can't wait to see day two!
(11.06.09 @ 06:54 AM)
Michelle Moore says:
WOW! So many activities covered, just in one day! I really feel like you captured the spirit and energy of the school, and I've never even been there! Love it! :)

Hi Everyone!
Sorry for the delay in posts, been super crazy busy. Which is a very good good thing they tell me. So here is a very fun post for a couple of reasons... the first being Gail is super fun to shoot with lots of personality and is very photogenic. And the second is that I shot it on my new Olympus EP1 Pen Camera. It was a real interesting shoot not having bags of heavy equipment, various lenses and camera bodies. The Pen is totally opposite, with a small sleak, rangefinder/point and shoot design, you do everything though a live view LCD on the back which made it a bit of a challenge in the bright beach sunlight. The lighting situation really put the camera to the test. The files are fantastic in color and very very sharp when i did lock in the focus.
The camera shoots in a 4:3 format, which I like a lot and its all shot in RAW. I am not a fan of the Olympus Raw software and wish that I could read the files in ACR, but no luck, correct me if I am wrong. I shot this all with the 17mm(35mm equivilant) olympus pancake lens.
The camera also shoot some very nice HD motion as well. 30 FPS with decent depth of field on that f2.8 pancake lens makes for a very nice film look to it all, which I love!
All in all a very fun camera that deffinalty have a place in my line up of toys. I just think it might have been a funny sight, me shooting Gail on the beach with such a SMALL camera!
