hi all, here are some casual reviews and thoughts on my new drobo system.  if you do not recall, it was time to change my hard drive system so that i had a faster, more reliable, more professional drive system for my mounting data...that was to some regards taking over and controlling my life.

So thanks to many i was referred to drobo and now have it up and running.  here are some thoughts.

- the product is nice, well made, cool looking, easy to use.  had it up and running in no time and was able to buy the standard drive sizes at best buy.
- next time, i would get the drives right from drobo, i found their prices to be more reasonable than what i can get them at best buy for...but i expect that price to come down over the months ahead
- i am now backing up on hard drive instantly, which is nice.  i was still doing DVD back ups which is just insanity, so that is saving me time.
- the disc space is now cheaper on the longer term, but not super super cheaper, but still worth it.
-  i did have a problem when i first got it up and running, i accidentaly was using the USB cable and not the firewire cable...did not work well, the firewire works great.
- also have a friend that mentioned his firewire cable was popping out easily...and had to tape it in...i have not had that issue.
- as far as price, it was listed cheaper at some distributors but the sales person filled me in on some promotional code which brought it down to a more competitive price.  i hear we are gonna get a promo code to for this blog post...we shall see...how much would you like off? ;-)

But it is a very nice system that now makes me think less of space and lets me concentrate on shooting, which is great.

Jessica Nichols says: Love my drobo! Piece of mind for sure! I definitely recommend partitioning it so time machine (if you're using it) doesn't suck a ton of space! (11.24.08 @ 07:29 PM)
Bobby says: Did you purchase the DROBO because of DRIVE FAILURE in the past? I still buy a 1TB Lacie every few months. Maybe the DROBO is cheaper in the long run? (11.20.08 @ 05:19 PM)
Corey says: Jay - New Egg: http://www.newegg.com/ is probably the cheapest place to buy hardware. + You may not have to pay tax either. I have used them a lot in the past. B&H is also top of my list as well. Got a mac book pro $400/less then anywhere else ( didn't pay tax). (11.20.08 @ 11:53 AM)
jay says: dwayne - no, thats not how it works to my knowledge, it just spits up the drives into 2 section, working and backup. jay (11.19.08 @ 12:16 AM)

Dwayne Hills says: Ok so the drobo has your imported images on disc one and makes a copy to disc two and three. so if you had a fourth disc would it also be copied there. (11.17.08 @ 09:10 PM)
Christopher Wren says: I'm thinking of getting one of these, but I've heard they are pretty slow. I've also got a ton of external drives, and it's easy to lose track of a certain shoot when I need it again. I would love to have something like this that can attach to my home network, but I'd settle for firewire if it keeps life simple! I know about the network attachment for these, but I'd like to not spend and arm and a leg. (11.17.08 @ 02:11 PM)
