About hi, my name is jay reilly.  i am a commercial/ editorial photographer based in carlsbad, ca.  some of my past client have include Nike, Sony, Hyatt, Conde Nast among many others.  this blog is dedicated to showcasing my assignment work and helping other photographers by sharing tips and tricks that have been vital to my business.  feel free to leave comments or post questions. thanks!
so with much success with my aurora collection of images licensing on getty and corbis, i felt like experimenting a bit.  the only big agency that i was unrepresented on was jupiter.  so i thought i would push a smaller collection of people/lifestyle images images direct with jupiter though workbook.  all agencies are a bit different on the expected return and the time it takes to make it happen.  but after about 8 months from the time i signed paperwork, to today, i am happy to say that the first license with jupiter was a great one!   also very interested to see what images do well.  it is very hard to presume one image is going to do very well and another one is not... and if i posted all my big sellers, you might laugh!  certainly not portfolio gems;-)

but the funny story behind the first image license with jupiter is that the image was from an editorial stroy shot for riviera magazine where next to nothng was paid to me for producing the image.  it was one of those smaller stories that does not really have much of a budget, but i agreed to take it as i felt the images might be marketable beyond the editorial.  here are a few but the bottom right image made me $4500 this month!  yehaa!

can your find my son in the above set of images?  the hint is he looks just like emy ;-)

boone: do work! isn't it funny what images bring in the dough vs port pieces. (10.27.08 @ 12:43 AM)
Robert benson: Hey Jay: I sold an image through Jupiter this month too! Only $150 on my end though. Can I ask how the image was licensed, to what kind of company? Was the royalty total $4500 or was that your split! Congrats. that's cool. (10.26.08 @ 06:22 PM)
delphine: Great photos!! $$ well deserved :) (10.26.08 @ 01:32 AM)
jay: sara - ouch, that is tough. i have very strong opinions about this and i best keep them to myself... but i do love them for archiving! well, with some luck maybe a larger agency will pick up your images. but i do feel your pain, this is a very time-consuming process to prepare images for stock at that level. (10.23.08 @ 11:12 AM)
Sara: @Jay I spent a bajillion hours over the past year shooting, submitting, keywording, and promoting our PhotoShelter portfolio and then out of the blue they closed up shop. Diversify - Lesson Learned! (10.23.08 @ 11:02 AM)
jay: hey sara - yeah, pretty nutz...i guess that is one reason why it is good to be diverse in the channels. but to be honest, it does not really affect me that much, i don't really care who licenses my images as long as someone does!! i am still reading the press releases and waiting to see what happens (10.23.08 @ 09:01 AM)
Sara: Hah. And now Jupiter has been sold to Getty. The stock world is going crazy! (10.23.08 @ 08:27 AM)
Julie Cruz: Sweet!!!!!!!! Congrats! (10.22.08 @ 11:32 PM)
Mikael: Holy fire balls batman! $4500 sounds good to me. Way to go! (10.22.08 @ 08:30 PM)

hi everyone,  well, still working out the self promo and actually was really inspired by the nikon promo awards.  if you have not seen it yet, check it out, pretty cool stuff.  the tough thing with me is i do not really have a set advertising budget.  i really need to start setting budget aside for these type of projects but currently i am looking at making promos for a local/regional market and in some instances some potential national clients.

so i am getting crafty and tryng to do it on my own budget.  still working out the paper selections, sizes, shipping method and design.  here are some tested layouts.  next step is to source the envalopes or shipping package.  i am thinking something clear to see the work inside.

as a follow up to the question, how do you build a great lifestyle portfolio...i referenced books that i take with me out on a shoot.  i was using an iphoto book, but changed over to my new inkjet book.  its great because i can keep it up to date with the best/newest stuff and can custom create books for the type of person or groups i might approach.

all in all it has been really enjoyable just to be able to print and share.  thanks to all for adding their comments and tips on inkjet printing.   look for a post on how to use them for promos...i am not sure yet, but working on it!

both shots below are ideal senarios on lifestyle stuff that i stumble upon...or in the case of the fly fisherman, hunt down and shoot...long story.

well, i did it!  i dusted off the epson 2200 photo printer and started to updated my printed book.  who said the printed portfolio is dead!  i have to admit, it has been fun seeing the prints come together!  but it has been a lot of work so lets hope it pays off.  the reason i am updating the book is because i had the request from sam rockman(la based photo rep/negotiator/producer) to go over it and certainly could not send it with out including the past 6 months of work.

its been fun, but just thought i would share some thoughts.  the 2200 is impressive now that i have really given a chance to shine.  the prints are standing up to my previously printed whcc stuff, and in fact looks better...i think.  i am printing on both matte and premium luster.  they are currently going in a 11x17 pina zangaro... and the immediate gratification of designing, printing and presenting is cool and is allowing for a more dynamic selection and finished product.

the thing i am thinking about most at this point is image presentation.  how i am showing the images as singles and stories.  its been challenging as i am not a graphic designer and editing your own work can be tough.  that's why i am bring sam into the mix.  but to give you some insight on how i am thinking about it is i am looking at some magazines that i appreciate the layouts and image use and creating some inspiration.  most of the mags are lifestyle in nature and have a very clean cool way about how the images interact with the feature.  see below, some mags and simon william's spread in the surfer 2008 photo annual.  tops shots are one from the nineplus 08 catalog and a portrait from a stock shoot.

port.jpg
so now that i have the 2200 out and ready... anyone have some pointers??  what do you use it for?  Do you feel an inkjet printer has its place today and are many of you still updating a printed portfolio?  just curious.

ilovephotoblogs: Great images. I've included your blog in a recent posting "20 Awesome Photoblogs - Los Angeles". Check it out when you have a moment. Best of luck and keep up the great work! (10.15.08 @ 07:33 PM)
jay: hey guys! the cookie mag pic is not mine, wish it were...it was shot by pamela hanson - pamelahanson.com (10.15.08 @ 04:52 PM)
Kat: I've been using an Epson R2400, which guzzles ink but makes beautiful prints, and I've created custom profiles for all my papers for the best results. I absolutely LOVE Lumijet papers. The have a large range for types and sizes, and it's fairly cheap. I still feel like people love to hold a print (something tangible) so I think a print portfolio is still important, but I've never gotten to the interview without sending in my website/blog first! It will still be a long time before print goes out!! (10.15.08 @ 10:34 AM)
robert benson: Looks like my last message got axed midsentence. I wanted to write that I saw that Cookies magazine in the bookstore just today, and thought "that's a nice image!". Did you shoot it? (10.14.08 @ 07:50 PM)
robert: ght: "that's a nice image". Did you shoot that? (10.14.08 @ 07:47 PM)
Scott R. Bush: 2200 is nice! Love mine and don't print on it as much as I should! David Williams would be saddened by that. Two papers to check are Epson's Velvet fine art and Hahnemuhle Fine Art Baryta. The velvet is off white so that will affect the photo. But the Baryta was recommended by a friend and he says resembles those of film prints. I've only been digital so can't compare, but it is nice paper! (10.14.08 @ 12:13 PM)
jay: hey millie! i am using epson paper only but certainly would consider something else. but i am happy with the epson luster and matt (10.13.08 @ 05:11 PM)
millie holloman: Hey Jay! I am actually interested in doing a bit of printing myself soon. Have not really done that in a LONG time so I am wondering what paper you have found to be best as far as brand? Are you using Epson paper or some other brand? (10.13.08 @ 04:39 PM)
Amish: Since i'm a wedding photographer, I usually keep a few self mount albums at home. Usually in the size of 10x10. About twice a year, I'll send of my favorite prints to my local lab, and get some prints done on Luster and Metallic, then mount them myself. It's a quick way of doing a printed portfolio with recent work. I do really like the pina zangaro portfolio's and i'm thinking of getting one, and doing some large prints. I think it would set me aside from other photographers when meeting clients. I also have a Canon Pro9000 that I use for making smaller self mount albums as suprise albums for clients right after their wedding. Usually in the size of 2x3" the albums are leather bound and brides LOVE em! (10.13.08 @ 04:25 PM)

for years the stock music scene has been pretty lame.  hope i am not offending anyone but i can remember looking for music to license for campaigns, websites, multimedia and other use and the options were pretty bad.  now i see my photography in more multimedia use and have been spending some time on getty's somewhat new music licensing interface called "pump audio".  i have to say that the options are getting good, very good.  the music is almost endless in just about any genre, mood and tempo.  the prices are fairly reasonable as well.  if your looking for music, check it out.

oh yeah, they just released a premium playlist.  you can actually license music from some of your biggest labels and names in music.. and some up and coming artists as well.

Paco: I agree. Online music licensing has been pretty pathetic up until the past few years. In addition to PUMP a few good sites to check out are: www.Rumblefish.com www.YouLicense.com www.MusicSupervisorGuide.com paco (10.11.08 @ 08:42 PM)

hi all,  after repeated requests about what lenses i am shooting with...here are the basics!

lens.jpg
i am a pretty easy guy to satisfy so this is basically the line up for more than 95% of what i shoot.

28mm f1.8 - $400ish, sharp, fast, narrow depth of field, yet wide, use this one often and is about all my underwater/waterhousing shots, the focus motor is pretty nice.  really like this lens and wish they made a 35mm at this quality and price.

35mm f2.0 - $200ish, sharp, fast, and got it because it fit in my waterhousing but now use it for so much more.  a super lens for the price...just about my favorite!  just not sure how long it will last

50mm f1.4 - $350ish, fast and sharp enough and at a great price.  did break on me once already...but i am a bit hard on this equipment...if you could not tell.

45ts f2.8 - have not been shooting this one as much but intend to use it a bit more in upcoming sessions.  actually a very fun portrait lens.

out of the above lenses, i would say i shoot the 35 and the 50 the most.  if i was stranded on an island and only had one lens, i guess the 35mm would do.  the funny thing is that it is the cheapest as well...so i better get 2 because i am not sure how long they last ;-)

others that make the rounds are the 20mm f2.8, 85mm f1.8,200mm f2.8.

so what should be obvious is that these are NOT the most expensive lenses in the canon lineup, but have served me very well.

jay: hi jeff, no, no fisheye for me. i used to own one...i sold, it just really did not have a place for me. 20mm is as wide as i need. (10.17.08 @ 12:15 PM)
Jeff Crace: Great info Jay........no fisheye??? (10.16.08 @ 10:53 AM)
abraham: i love that little 35 2.0! yes, it feels like a toy and makes a ton of noise but its super lightweight and can produce super-sharp captures and great bokeh for $200! i recently went on vacation to europe for 3 weeks and thats the only lens i took, it worked out great! you can see some posts on my blog... (10.15.08 @ 03:16 PM)
Kristin: Hi Jay- I love following your blog, so much good information. It's interesting you use all prime lenses. I have the 50 and 85 and felt like I needed a zoom lens like the 17-85 in those situations where you can't always move to the exact spot you need to be to get the shot. I had the 20mm/2.8 but sold it because I felt I wasn't using it much, almost too wide. But I need something in for a wide lens. Your opinion is stay with prime lenses? Would the 28 be better than the 35 with the digital conversion (I don't have the full frame sensor)? (10.14.08 @ 06:05 PM)
tony Bisson: Hi Jay, I agree the choice of a 35 f2 as a desert island lens. Canon's is is in such a cheap barrel and it makes a kid's oy sound when it focuses too. What a shame. (10.13.08 @ 07:28 AM)
Lynsey Peterson: Thanks for divulging---super helpful. :) (10.12.08 @ 09:25 PM)
stacy t: jay - i agree with you. i have the 50mm 1.4 and find that the sweet spot is at about 2.2-2.8. if it's wide open, any movement will blur. but it's there is i need it and it's a sharp lens. love the prime lens. (10.12.08 @ 04:28 AM)
jay: 50 has not been a bit soft for me, but i don't always shoot it wide open. i have found that a little camera movement when it is wide open will kill my focus. (10.10.08 @ 03:18 PM)
jay: hi guys - well i am sure the l series are great. they just did not fit in the port i was shooting with so i got these and like them so much kept them for other things! i can see myself adding the line of l series for 35 and 50...but i just don't feel it is necessary at this time for me...we all have budgets. my images have been sharp as i need them for what i am shooting. in fact sometimes too sharp! (10.10.08 @ 03:16 PM)
Wesley Brown: Well, good to know you aren't using L's! I use the 28mm, but I'm eying that 50mm. (10.10.08 @ 03:08 PM)
Christopher Wren: Hi Jay, I'm a big fan of your work. I just got the 50mm F1.4 and I have found it to be extremely soft at F1.4, even in the center, do you find the same thing to be true? I was amazed that you shoot professional quality with some relatively low-cost equipment, no L glass! I was pondering getting some expensive L-glass, but maybe these primes are just as good. (10.10.08 @ 03:06 PM)

congrats everyone! i am really proud how this contest turned out. it was very close among many of the images and it was really exciting to see how the popular vote went and the judges decisions. as you can see from the above the first, second, third winners from the judges, the popular vote, and two honorable mentions from the judges selections.

Just let you know how close it was, here was the judges scores: 1st place had 76 points, 2nd prize had 72 points, third prize had 69 points. 64 ad 56 points respectively for the honable mentions. a very close contest indeed. voting for the judges was simple, based on a 10 point criteria for summer feeling and overall quality of the photo.

popular vote was had by more than 400 single votes for the winning image.

congrats to all the winners and thanks for participating!

Your last couple posts come through with extended characters showing in odd places, for example (this is a copy/paste of today's post): " hey guys! Â voting is closed for both the popular vote and the judges vote. Â We have our winners and we are just making up the winners page with all the info and links. Â I am really happy with the results and the all the voting and scoring system will be shared as well." We're seeing 'Â' in lots of places. Maybe its just me -- but I don't normally see these in your posts and it's happened on your past two entries. Just a heads up. tonya (10.08.08 @ 10:05 AM)
